Black Sheep Squadron King Fling

Post by kittyfritters »

The King Fling is an annual contest that the Black Sheep Squadron holds on the morning of Martin Luther King Day. Since it is held outdoors it was decided to hold it this year at the Stonehurst Recreation Center with masks and proper social distancing.

It is a one design contest with everyone flying Guillow's "Flying Machine" models, supplied by the club, and built on site the morning of the contest. Some modifications are allowed, replacing the infamous "blue band", relieving the fuselage above the front hook for rubber clearance and making the wing polydihedral.

Although the weather report called for gale force winds the morning dawned clear, warm and calm...perfect flying weather. The contest was to end at 10 AM and that's when the wind started to come up! Proper social distancing was observed except for the few seconds it took to get the group picture.

Some of the younger modelers did well. Heath Cho, age 10, did quite well flying one unmodified except for the replaced rubber. Jonathan Palmer showed what beginner's luck (and good coaching) can do.
