36" Slingsby Prefect

Postby Monz » Tue Jan 03, 2017 12:11 am

Made a start on another one of these to replace my now retired (trashed) previous version. I messed up something somewhere and the formers were skew which I only saw after glueing so had to add some 1/16th stringers top and bottom of opposite sides of the rear fus to balance things out again. Not sure how it happened, but it won't be seen once covered. 2.2g so far

Bit more done. Finished the fus and built the tails feathers. I screwed up somewhere so there are some skew bits which I've fixed best I can. So will finish this in plain tissue and see how it flies with the new wing section before building another with a scale finish. 7g so far.

I have looked at that plan a number of times. Now after seeing your bones I think I will move it up on my list! You do beautiful work.

Thanks faif, it really is a nice little model, especially at 36".

I managed to get this 99% completed on Thursday evening. Just the wing struts and wheel to add.

I used to light a balsa for the leading and trailing edges of the wings which led to them bowing quite badly so I added a length of 1mm carbon rod right through each one. That solved it mostly. There's still a slight bow to them but I can live with it for a test model.

Covering was Hobbycraft tissue with two coats thinned banana oil to seal. With ballast to bring the CG to about 20% (that's what the old one liked for outdoors) the weight is 20.8g, less than half the weight of the old one. Now for some decent weather...

Very nice! 20.8g sounds like an absolute feather for 36" span. You'll be in danger of losing it at that weight.
(Btw, have you started that tank glider yet?)
